Chapter 17
Twenty minutes later, Mike set the plates of veal marsalaâveal covered in a mushroom-and-wine sauce and Parmesan cheeseâon the table, along with egg noodles. âDinner is served.â He brought in chocolate cheesecake while Ted poured glasses of red wine.
Nick finished his spaghetti, and Greg hurried to take his plate.
âNow thatâs what the women like,â Aidan said. âA man who helps in the kitchen.â
âDo you help in the kitchen?â Greg asked.
âSure, when Ted and Mike let me. They usually tell me they have it covered and to go do my research before we all fade into oblivion. Before they came to work for meââ
âYou were skipping meals, they said.â
âTrue, but the meals I made were good, and I cleaned up after myself.â Aidan didnât want Holly to think he was a slouch at cooking or cleaning up. He did have a maid, but sometimes he liked to do the dishes to give himself time to think about what else he could try with his research.
âThanks, guys.â Holly joined Aidan at the dining-room table. âThis looks delicious.â
âI have to agree,â Aidan told them. âJust perfect.â
Ted slapped Greg on the back. âCome on. Letâs go before their food gets cold.â
âHeading upstairs to bed,â Nick said. âJust donât let there be any crazy and wild parties going on when you all get home. Night all.â
Holly smiled at him. âNight, Nick. Pleasant dreams.â
Nick snorted. âIf I donât hear the wind whipping the tree branches and snow, I probably wonât be able to sleep.â
âI know the feeling when Iâve been camping out too long. Night,â Aidan said. âWeâll see you in the morning.â
âSee you then.â Nick disappeared up the stairs.
Ted, Mike, and Greg were already rushing out the wolf door as wolves.
âTheyâre not running too far away, are they?â Holly sounded worried they might get into trouble, especially when her brother was with them.
âNope. Their job is guarding me, so theyâll just beâ¦guarding. Theyâll hang around the area. Hope Greg knows that and doesnât get bored too easily.â
âHeâs a good kid. He loves being one of the men. Heâs used to being around two sisters and his mom, so this has been good for him. Dad is so busy with the shop that heâs worn out when he comes home. I hope Mike doesnât overdo it after having that blood transfusion.â She took a sip of her wine.
âYou either, after giving blood.â
âWhat will you do if you find a cure for our people and no longer need bodyguards?â
âI wouldnât be able to enjoy their culinary expertise. Theyâre always trying something new out on me, and I swear theyâve never made a bad dish. Except for the time they burned a pan of tilapia. Each one thought the other was watching it.â
She smiled. âThatâs easy to do when there are too many chefs in the kitchen.â
âI have the same problem when itâs just me in the kitchen. But that has to do with me going back to look at my lab work and forgetting about the meal Iâm cooking.
